The Best Time to Book Your Beach Session
One of the questions I get asked most often is, "What time should we schedule our beach session?" The answer is simple: light makes all the difference.
As photographers, we don't just photograph people—we photograph light. The time of day completely changes the mood, color, and feel of your images, which is why I carefully schedule every beach session around the best natural light.
Golden Hour: Warm, Dreamy, and Timeless
Golden Hour is the hour before sunset (or just after sunrise) and is my favorite time to photograph families, couples, and children on the beach.
During this time, the sun sits low in the sky, creating a soft, warm glow that flatters every skin tone. The light is gentle, shadows are minimal, and everything is bathed in beautiful golden hues. It's the perfect recipe for those light-filled, airy images that feel relaxed, romantic, and timeless.

Blue Hour: Soft, Calm, and Coastal
Just after the sun dips below the horizon comes Blue Hour—a short but magical window when the sky transforms into soft shades of blue, lavender, and sometimes even blush pink.
The beach becomes peaceful, the colors are rich yet subtle, and the atmosphere feels calm and cinematic. Blue Hour creates a completely different look than Golden Hour, giving your gallery beautiful variety with dreamy silhouettes, pastel skies, and reflective water.
Because this light only lasts about 20–30 minutes, we'll move efficiently to make the most of every moment before daylight fades.

Why I Don't Schedule Midday Beach Sessions
While the beach is beautiful all day long, the hours between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM typically produce the least flattering light for portraits.
The overhead sun casts harsh shadows under the eyes and chin, bright highlights on faces, and causes squinting in the intense sunlight. It can also make skin appear shiny and washed out instead of soft and natural.
Midday is also when beaches are at their busiest. More people means crowded backgrounds, distractions, and less room to create the clean, peaceful images most clients envision.
For these reasons, I schedule the majority of my beach sessions during Golden Hour and into Blue Hour whenever possible.
The Magic Is Worth the Wait
Some of my favorite images happen after clients think the session is over. As the sky changes colors minute by minute, we capture those final moments of soft pastel skies, glowing reflections, and genuine connection.
The difference between an average beach photo and one you'll treasure for years often comes down to one thing: timing.
By scheduling your session around Golden Hour and Blue Hour, we're giving ourselves the best possible light to create natural, timeless images that truly capture the beauty of your family and the magic of the beach.
